Don’t know why there are no planes up in the sky? The answer is stormy weather. Cold, snowy, wintry weather has caused United Continental, the number two airline in the world, to cancel 22,500 flights in the first two months of 2014. The figure represents a 400% increase in flight cancellations for the airline over the first two months of last year.
Life is bad, and there is gloom and misery everywhere for other airlines as well. According to flight tracker masFlight, through the middle of February approximately 75,000 U.S. flights were cancelled at American airports.
JetBlue Airways, which runs almost half of its flights through New York and Boston, was devastated by the heavy snowstorms of 2014. Just in the first week of the year, JetBlue cancelled 1800 flights, resulting in a loss of $45 million in revenue and $30 million in profit.
Also expected to take substantial losses is Delta, the number three carrier in the U.S, behind American Airlines Group and United.
