Following House Speaker John Boehner’s decision to move forward a no-strings-attached increase in the debt ceiling, the Senate Conservatives Fund asserted that Boehner must be replaced.
“Republicans are giving up because they know that winning is impossible when their leaders are determined to lose,” a statement on the website said. “These leaders have telegraphed weakness to the Democrats and sabotaged conservative efforts so many times that Republicans now have no leverage.”
“There’s only one solution,” the group states. “John Boehner must be replaced as Speaker of the House.”
The group contends that Boehner has failed to use Republican control of the House – which conservatives helped to achieve in 2010 – to put a stop to legislation that only serves to increase spending and taxes, raise the debt ceiling, and fund implementation of ObamaCare.
“Instead of fighting for conservative principles, Speaker Boehner has completely surrendered to the Democrats,” the group stated. “Unless we install a new leader who will actually go on offense, Democrats will never fear us and we will never have any leverage.”
The Senate Conservatives Fund added that several other conservative groups, including For America, Tea Party Patriots, and FreedomWorks have also called for Boehner to be replaced.
The group has launched a petition called “Replace the Speaker” and is urging supporters to sign it.
As the Washington Times reports, Matt Hoskins, executive director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, said, “Conservatives helped Republicans win a majority in the House of Representatives, which made it possible for John Boehner to become speaker. Unfortunately, he has chosen to ignore us and help President Obama enact his liberal agenda.”
The Senate Conservatives Fund, which was founded by former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint – who is now president of the Heritage Foundation – says that it is dedicated to electing “true conservative leaders.”
“Republicans must know that conservatives expect them to make a change at the top, and we’re not going to give up on this until John Boehner is gone,” Hoskins said. “It’s sad that it has come to this, but enough is enough. We will never stop the massive spending and debt that are destroying our country if the Republican speaker of the House surrenders to the Democrats and stabs conservatives in the back.”
