Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that immigration reform will not happen in 2014, despite a renewed push from his counterparts on the other side of the capitol in House GOP leadership.
“I think we have sort of an irresolvable conflict here,” McConnell said at a press conference Tuesday, according to The Hill. “The Senate insists on comprehensive [legislation]. The House says it won’t go to conference with the Senate on comprehensive and wants to look at [it] step by step.”
“I don’t see how you get to an outcome this year with the two bodies in such different places,” McConnell added.
McConnell’s comments come in the wake of similar warnings to the House GOP leadership against moving on amnesty from his deputy, Senate Minority Whip Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), and from Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Jeff Sessions (R-AL).
House GOP leadership rolled out their immigration “principles” at their retreat with the conference last week to much fanfare in the media and from leftwing groups like FWD.us, but they largely failed to move the needle in the conference – which by and large still opposes amnesty.
