The California legislature is now forcing through a bill that would force employers to cover sick days for hourly workers. The legislation, proposed by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), would be designed to ensure that hourly workers don’t show up to work sick and then infect other employees and consumers.
Gonzalez stated, “If you’re an hourly worker and you’re sick you have to choose if you’re going to pay the bills or take a day off.” Working 90 days would earn you three paid sick days. Gonzalez also stated that sick days would allow single mothers to take their children to the doctors during work hours.
