A national Breitbart News/Judicial Watch poll has found that a majority (51%) of Americans oppose sanctuary cities, where local laws “prohibit law enforcement officers from helping to enforce federal immigration laws.”
Of the 51% of Americans opposed to sanctuary cities, 31% strongly opposed. Thirty-four percent of those surveyed favored sanctuary policies for illegal immigrants while another 14% said they did not have an opinion on the matter.
The poll found that “majorities of Independents and Republicans, and a plurality of Democrats oppose” sanctuary cities. In addition, 58% of Americans with “children in the home” oppose sanctuary cities while a plurality of Hispanics (46%) and a majority of blacks (56%) do as well. In addition, 60% of Americans between the ages of 45-54 oppose sanctuary cities.
California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed a law that essentially made California a sanctuary state for most illegal immigrants who are not felons and have not committed violent crimes. Inspired by Brown, the new mayor-elect of Boston, Martin Walsh (D), has also indicated he would try to make Boston a sanctuary city.
The Breitbart News/Judicial Watch Poll was conducted by The Polling Company from Dec. 13-16 using live callers. The survey had a dual-frame sample of 65% landline, 35% cell phone, and its margin of error of is +/-3.1.
