According to new salary information released by California Controller John Chiang, the top ten county employees in the state of California are medical personnel at county hospitals. An orthopedic surgeon under contract with Kern County pulled down $1,040,651 in 2012; that surgeon was followed by a Kern County faculty physician ($828,287), the chairman at a department of surgery in Kern County ($753,465), a physician at Valley Medical Center in Santa Clara County ($658,521), a chief physician of internal medicine in Los Angeles County ($600,258), a core physician in Kern County ($574,530), two more physicians in San Joaquin County and two from Santa Clara County.
Overall, these ten individuals are earning in excess of $6.6 million.
The top earning state officer in California is the president and CEO of the state compensation insurance fund, who earns $591,308. Oddly, clocking in at second place is a correctional lieutenant, who made $583,085 in 2012. Two senior investment officers at the Public Employees’ Retirement System pulled down a combined $987,663.
