WH Says Religious Businessowners 'Dictate' Contraception Decisions to Women

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney released a statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to take up the case of Hobby Lobby, a Christian-owned company that does not want to cover health insurance services that violate its religious precepts under Obamacare. In an incredible reversal of logic, Carney stated, “As a general matter, our policy is designed to ensure that health care decisions are made between a woman and her doctor. The President believes that no one, including the government or for-profit corporations, should be able to dictate those decisions to women.”

Of course, it is not the company that dictates a woman’s decisions about contraception to her. It is her decision to work at a company, and the company’s decision about what to cover. Furthermore, it is the government that is deciding for religious businessowners what religious precepts they must violate, a blatant destruction of the First Amendment. Carney’s argument is tantamount to stating that because a company has not bought its employees new houses, it has restricted their ability to buy a new house.

But the Obamacare contraception mandate was never about freedom. It was always about pitting secularism against religion, and using the power of government to sponsor secularism.
