On Friday, Crystal Mangum, the woman most famous for falsely accusing members of the Duke lacrosse team of raping her in 2006, was convicted of second-degree murder. Mangum killed her boyfriend by stabbing him in 2011.
She received a sentence of 14 years minimum, up to a maximum of 18 years. Mangum stabbed Reginald Daye in the chest on April 3, 2011 during a fight at his apartment. She said she had killed him in self-defense after he dragged her out of the bathroom by her hair, but Daye, who originally survived the stabbing before dying of his wounds, told law enforcement that Mangum tried to attack him with knives repeatedly before stabbing him in the chest.
Mangum’s original accusations against the Duke lacrosse players became a national story, egged on by an eager media. After prosecutor Mike Nifong brought a prosecution, the case fell apart based on lack of evidence; Mangum was found to be lying.
