On Friday. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) fired up pro-gay marriage supporters when he said that same-sex marriage could be compared to incest because both involved relationships with adults in which the parties involved could not legally marry in his state.
Corbett was explaining a state attorneys’ statement from earlier this summer in which they compared same-sex partners to children because neither group could legally marry in Pennsylvania. Corbett said, “It was an inappropriate analogy, you know. I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don’t you?”
Notwithstanding that Corbett’s remark was technically true, the Pennsylvania Democratic Party quickly put Corbett’s statement, which he made in a TV interview, on YouTube. The chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, scorned Corbett’s remark, calling it “an absurd comparison of same-sex marriage” to sibling incest that is “offensive and demeaning.”
Corbett is running behind two Democrats, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz and state Treasurer Rob McCord, in his quest for reelection in 2014.
