GOP Whip McCarthy Confident Government Won't Shut Down

House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says he is not concerned there will be a government shutdown, as the House has done its part and the responsibility to pass a spending bill now rests on the Senate. 

“No. We’re not gonna shut down,” McCarthy told Breitbart News. “We sent a funding bill to the Senate and the Senate exec. The concern I have is that the Senate is not working.”

McCarthy thinks Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) should have called back the upper chamber on Sunday and began working on passing the latest Continuing Resolution, which included a one-year delay in Obamacare’s individual mandate, among other measures the House sent back to the Senate late Saturday night.

Twenty House GOP members mocked Reid and the rest of the Democratic Party on Sunday in front of the locked Senate doors for not working on the House legislation, The Hill reported:

“I urge the Senate to come back,” second-term Rep. Bill Johnson (R-Ohio) said to shouts of “Amen.”

“I’m glad now to invite to the microphone the distinguished majority leader in the Senate, Harry Reid,” he added to loud laughs from his colleagues. “Oh, I’m sorry, Harry’s not here today. Maybe he’ll show up later.”

Football in hand, Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Ark.) accused Democrats of deliberately “running out the clock.” He claimed to have been told by “high-level Democrats in town” that their plan has long been to force a government shutdown and blame it on Republicans.

“This is the old football strategy: when you get to where you want to be in a football game, you run out the clock, because you think you like where you are,” he said. “That’s exactly what’s going on here. If they really cared if this government shutdown would shut down or not, they’d be here.”

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) accused Democrats of taking a “lazy break until 2 o’clock on Monday.”

The House also voted unanimously on separate legislation to continue to pay the military if the government shuts down and passed a bill that would repeal the medical device tax currently embedded in the health care law.
