Virginia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Terry McAuliffe met recently with New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg “to get support from the billionaire politician.”
The meeting, according to Politico, took place in New York City a week and a half ago.
The outgoing mayor has spent more than $15 million on his gun control group Mayors Against Illegal Guns and on a super PAC to support a candidate in a special House race in Illinois.
Because of those efforts, he’s become the face of the gun control movement, making him less of an attractive supporter in places like Virginia than more clearly Democratic-leaning cities or states. He could also be a helpful rallying cry for Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli with his base voters.
The meeting set off alarm bells among gun owners throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Second Amendment supporting website BearingArms.com observed, “if [McAuliffe is] meeting with Bloomberg, he’s doing so in order to talk about how the two New Yorkers (McAuliffe is from Syracuse) can force something akin to the NY SAFE Act down the throats of Virginia gun owners if elected.”
According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, the recently passed NY SAFE Act “expands a ban on military-style weapons, requires mental health professionals to report threats, limits magazines to seven bullets, taxes bullets, and creates a registry.” The law has been blamed by at least one New York-based gun manufacturer manufacturer for its recent decision to move from the state.
McAuliffe, who apparently purchased a gun for the first time in his life in January of this year, has received a grade of “F” from the National Rifle Association.
