Weiner is shrinking in New York. According to the latest Quinnipiac University poll, Anthony Weiner is polling a paltry 8% of likely Democratic primary voters, well behind Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, (36%), City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, (21%), and former comptroller Bill Thompson, (20%). If de Blasio gets 40% of the vote, he will avoid a runoff.
If there is a runoff, the poll indicates the margin would be:
De Blasio (59%), Quinn (30%)
De Blasio (52%), Thompson (36%)
Thompson (57%), Quinn (33%)
Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, exclaimed, “Talk about breaking out of the pack! And if there is a runoff, he clobbers Council Speaker Christine Quinn or former Comptroller and 2009 Democratic challenger William Thompson.”
Marcia Kramer of CBS 2 reported that some people think de Blasio’s stance against the city’s stop-and-frisk program may have helped him skyrocket in the polls; he received the endorsement of City Councilman Brad Lander (D-39th), who led the charge against racial profiling. The Quinnipiac poll found de Blasio getting 34% of the black vote; Thompson, who is black, only got 25%.
