Speaking at the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) blasted what he termed continuing American racism while paying tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. He said “invisible signs…form a gulf between us. Too many of us still believe our differences define us…the scars and stains of racism still remain deeply embedded in American society.” He cited stop and frisk in New York and Trayvon Martin in Florida as evidence of racism. He blamed the “mass incarceration” of millions of black men on racism, as well as the “renewed struggle for voting rights.” He added, “We must never, never give up!”
