New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote a personal check for $350,000 to “Taxpayers for Responsible Democracy,” a 527 group helping Democrat state senators John Morse and Angela Giron fight the recall efforts against them.
Bloomberg joined the contributions of 17,000 other individuals and groups “which raised a total of $708,000 between April and August 22,” according to Denver’s FOX31.
Some of the other contributors included Billionaire Eli Broad, who gave $250,000; Conservation Colorado, which gave $75,000; and “Miami philanthropist Barbara Stiefel who gave $20,000.”
Two other groups, “United for Angela” and “A Whole Lot of People For John Morse,” have also raised substantial money to help the two senators fight recall.
United for Angela has raised $586,187 since April alone, while A Whole Lot of People for John Morse has raised $453,149.
FOX31 reports that United for Angela’s Jennie Peek-Dunstone thanked Bloomberg for his recent contribution which will be used to “[fight] back against the ‘wave of fear’ that recall proponents want to send across this country.”
Morse and Giron both supported the gun control laws passed in the state legislature then signed by Governor John Hickenlooper (D) on March 20. The recall elections for Morse and Giron take place on September 10.
