Notre Dame Will Admit Illegal Immigrants

The University of Notre Dame, a Catholic school, will admit illegal immigrants and provide them with financial aid.

“We will strengthen our incoming class and give deserving young people the chance for a Notre Dame education,” Don Bishop, associate vice president for undergraduate enrollment, said in a statement announcing the policy Thursday.

The university also said it “is committed to meeting the full demonstrated financial need for all admitted students.” Illegal immigrants are not eligible for federal student aid, but the university’s announcement signals that Notre Dame would make up the difference between the cost and what the student and his or her family can afford.

There was not an official ban on illegal immigrants before, but the school would admit students as international and require a student visa.

Notre Dame is not the first school to be lenient on illegal immigrants. Former SEIU Attorney Kent D. Wong, the Director of UCLA’s Center for Labor Research and Education, said UCLA would join National Labor College to create the National Dream University, which enables illegal immigrants to earn up to 18 college credits online.

University of California-Berkeley received a $1 million donation to fund scholarships for illegal immigrants in the school. The donation is legal because of the “California Dream Act,” which allows “illegal immigrants to receive privately funded scholarships to attend the state’s public colleges and universities after attending at least three years of high school in the state.”
