White House: Benghazi a 'Phony' Scandal

On July 31 the White House declared the continuing controversy over the Benghazi attack to be a “phony” scandal.

When White House press secretary Jay Carney was asked about President Obama’s repeated claim that he is being distracted by “phony scandals,” he replied with examples like “the IRS targeting of conservative groups and… Benghazi.”

What we’ve seen, as time has passed and more and more facts have become known, whether it’s about the attacks in Benghazi and the talking points or revelations about the conduct at the IRS, that attempts to turn this into a scandal have failed.

Carney was referring “specifically” to GOP claims “that the administration mislead the public about the nature of the attack, by stressing the connection to a [YouTube video].”

Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) responded to Carney by saying that referring to Benghazi as a “phony” scandal “is incredibly wrong” and “misleading to the American people.”
