The exodus from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” (MAIG) continues.
Fox News reports that although Bloomberg is still drawing new mayors into his group, a number have abandoned ship since the group began focusing more on passage of more gun control laws rather than enforcement of laws that already exist.
Breitbart News reported this same trend on July 22, when it was discovered that 50 mayors had abandoned Bloomberg’s group since February of this year.
Nashua, NH Mayor Donnalee Lozeau quit because of the way MAIG went after Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), specifically for voting against Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) gun control bill in April.
Lozeau said in response, “Wait a minute. I don’t want to be part of something like that. I told them, ‘You’re Mayors Against Illegal Guns; you’re not mayors for gun control.'”
MAIG was founded by Bloomberg in 2006 and co-founded by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The group exists, in part, to offer a counter voice to the NRA. But right now “the total number of mayors and local executives [in the group represent] just 5 percent of America’s 19,000 municipalities.”
