Poll: Weiner Drops to Fourth Place in Mayoral Race

Disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner’s bid to become mayor of New York City took another hit Monday when a poll released by Quinnipiac University showed that he has dropped to fourth place in the Democratic primary. 

In the head-to-head matchup with other candidates in the Democratic primary, support for Weiner, the frontrunner less than a week ago on July 24, has evaporated. 

The poll shows City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in the lead with 27 percent, followed by Bill de Blasio with 21 percent, and former Comptroller William Thompson with 20 percent. At fourth place with 16 percent, Weiner is moving downwards towards the also-ran category that includes former Comptroller John Liu at 6 percent and former City Council member Sal Albanese at 2 percent.

In addition, a majority of likely Democratic primary voters want him to drop out of the race–by a margin of 53 to 40 percent. Women want Weiner to drop out by a 54 to 42 percent margin, while men think he should drop out by a 52 to 37 percent margin.

White voters want him to drop out by a 64 to 25 percent margin. By a nine-point margin, 53 to 42 percent, black voters do not want him to drop out.

Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said the results of the poll indicate “it looks like former Congressman Anthony Weiner may have sexted himself right out of the race for New York City mayor.”

By a 65 to 34 percent margin, likely Democratic primary voters think that Weiner’s personal behavior is a legitimate campaign issue.

The Quinnipiac University Institute Poll was conducted of 446 likely Democratic primary voters over the five-day period beginning July 24 and ending July 28. It has a margin of error of  plus or minus 4.6 percent.
