While some corners of the Democrat establishment and much of the mediaare pressuring Anthony Weiner to pull out, New York voters disagree. A new NBC4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll shows that, while 43% of New Yorkers want the disgraced mayoral candidate to drop out of the race, a full 47% still want the ex-Congressman to stay in.
It should be noted that this poll was taken after the latest revelations surrounding Weiner’s sexting with women who are not his wife, and doing so as recently as last year.
Weiner can also take some solace in the fact that if 47% of voters want him to stay in the race, that can reasonably be interpreted to mean that 47% of voters are still considering supporting him.
Weiner is also receiving support from some top Democrats. The Daily Beast’s Peter Beinert wants Weiner to stay in.
The poll is mostly bad news, though. Weiner has lost his lead to Christine Quinn and now trails the City Council Speaker, 25% to 16%. Before the new sexting revelations, Weiner was ahead 25% to 20%.
The primary election will take place September 10.
