Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), one of the most prominent supporters of comprehensive immigration reform and a member of the Gang of Eight that wrote the bill, falsely claimed that Americans “overwhelmingly” support the legislation.
“Overwhelmingly, the American people want us to act,” McCain claimed to Newsmax on Monday. “Now there’s varying opinions as to how they want us to act, but they sure want us to act because almost every American knows that 11 million people living in the shadows is not what America’s supposed to be all about.”
A new Washington Post/ABC News poll, though, found support for the Senate’s immigration bill was hardly overwhelming. In fact, only 46% of Americans supported the Senate’s immigration bill, while 44% are opposed to it. In addition, only 19% of respondents “strongly” supported the Senate’s immigration bill, while 30% “strongly” oppose it.
