Houston, Texas — The July 22, 2013 New Black Panther Party (NBPP) march in Houston escalated quickly almost as soon as the New Black Panthers came into view of counter-demonstrators.
With both sides yelling and chanting, Houston NBPP leader Quanell X began what appeared to be efforts to pass a police line of horses separating the two groups. With hundreds following his move, Houston Police acted quickly to get Quanell X and the NBPP marchers back onto the sidewalk.
The two opposing groups were separated by a large street and both were instructed by police to stay on their respective sides’ sidewalk. As soon as the NBPP crowd began making moves to cross, police horses can be seen aggressively positioning to stop the crowd. One officer leaned down from his horse and said to Quanell X, “Please don’t do this. I’m begging you not to do this.”
Ultimately, a Houston Police negotiator stepped in and peaceably resolved the situation.
