A poll released by left-leaning Public Policy Polling on July 15 shows that the approval rating for Virginia’s Republican Governor, Bob McDonnell, has plummeted 12 points in the last month, the fallout from a series of scandalous allegations.
It marks the only time since he began serving as governor in January 2010 that his disapproval rating (41 percent) has been higher than his approval rating (36 percent).
On the question of whether the allegations against him are sufficient to require his resignation, 45 percent think he should stay in office, while 35 percent want him to resign. According to the poll, only 31 percent of Virginia voters now consider him to be an ethical politician, while 45 percent consider him unethical.
Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy polling, said that McDonnell’s ethical issues “are not helping GOP prospects this fall.” According to Debnam, ” Bob McDonnell has gone from being a major positive to a major liability for Republican candidates in Virginia.”
Full results of the poll can be seen here.
The poll was conducted in automated phone interviews of 601 registered voters in Virginia between July 11 and July 14 and has a margin of error of 4 percent.
