Over the long July 4th weekend, some 38 shooting incidents occurred throughout the city of Chicago. Nonetheless, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy says that the city’s crime-fighting has been stellar and was “clearly working,” although he admitted he was “disappointed” about the Independence Day statistics. “There’s still an unacceptable amount of violence in this city,” he said. McCarthy pointed to a 25 percent reduction in shootings over last year, as well as a 29 percent drop in the murder rate. He also blamed the summer weather for the number of shootings. McCarthy said he counted on Mayor Rahm Emanuel for support. “I’m absolutely positive that I enjoy the mayor’s confidence,” stated McCarthy.
