During his recent trip to Africa, President Barack Obama made an illuminating statement that reveals how progressives view the poor in underdeveloped parts of the world.
Ultimately, if you think about all the youth that everybody has mentioned here in Africa, if everybody is raising living standards to the point where everybody has got a car and everybody has got air conditioning, and everybody has got a big house, well, the planet will boil over — unless we find new ways of producing energy
Media Matters For America has already attempted to spin what Obama clearly said in the above video. Thomas Bishop attacked Red State’s Erick Erickson, claiming that he was guilty of “twisting” what Obama said.
Erick Erickson distorted a statement made by President Obama on the need for new energy solutions to claim he said African nations ‘must remain poor’ to avoid the negative effects of climate change.
Obama clearly says in the context of “youth that everybody has mentioned here in Africa,” that “everybody is raising living standards to the point where everybody [presumably the youth in Africa under discussion here] has got a car and everybody has got air conditioning and everybody has got a big house, well, the planet will boil over…
He then provides the solution to keeping the planet from boiling over due to global Wwarming: finding new ways of producing energy.
It cannot be argued that Barack Obama just said if standards of living are raised in Africa and elsewhere in which “everybody” has cars, air conditioning, and big houses powered by fossil fuels that release carbon, global warming will destroy our planet UNLESS we find new ways of producing energy. He clearly says this.
The problem with Obama’s statement is twofold:
1) Global Warming isn’t happening now and hasn’t happened for 15 years.
An increasing amount of scientific evidence is being uncovered that demonstrate that the computer models the climate fanatics have appealed to for almost two decades are not just wrong, they are spectacularly wrong. Due to huge amounts of development in countries like China and India, much more carbon dioxide than the computer models projected has been sent up into the atmosphere. If the theory that carbon output increased global temperature was accurate, we should be seeing warming ABOVE what the models predicted. What do scientists see instead when they look at the actual data and test the reliability of the models?
2) It’s an admission progressives don’t think standards of living in undeveloped nations should be raised UNTIL these alternative energy sources are up and running.
Obama clearly believes an entire world where the poor have been lifted up out of poverty and had their standard of living elevated to include cars, air conditioning, and houses powered by fossil fuels spells doom for the planet.
If he really believes it is a mortal threat, would not the solution to this problem be to keep undeveloped nations undeveloped UNTIL those new energy sources are ready to be utilized? Isn’t that EXACTLY what Erickson claimed Obama meant? How then can that be called “distorting” Obama’s words?
The main reason we are seeing a big climate push from Obama & Co. right now is that the fraud is coming apart. It was always about shifting global economies from free market capitalism to a state-controlled one. Somebody told me this in the 1980s, and it’s more true than ever:”Scratch a Green, find a Red.”
This fake concern for the poor is what motivated the ClimateGate email leaker to expose the fraud. It was almost four years ago that someone high in the climate science community was compelled by his conscience to blow the whistle on this huge fraud that could impact the lives of billions of people.
In case you missed it at the time, here is the ClimateGate leaker explaining why he did it.
The three paragraphs of the leaker’s statement are especially relevant to what President Obama said in Johannesburg. It was his concern for the poor in Africa that compelled this climate science insider to risk his career by exposing the fraud.
It would be easier to swallow Obama’s platitudes about being concerned for the poor if he were not part of a progressive movement of environmental fanatics that have consigned millions of Africans to death from malaria and other diseases due to a ban of DDT.
