Massachusetts Senate: Debate Disaster for Democrat Markey

In Tuesday night’s final debate for John Kerry’s U.S. Senate seat versus Republican Gabriel Gomez, Congressman Ed Markey (D-MA) made a number of significant gaffes.

One flashpoint in the campaign has been on the issue of taxes. In one commercial, Markey hit Gomez for not wanting to raise taxes on the wealthy. During last night’s debate, though, the moderator hit Markey, suggesting he’s been hypocritical on the issue. Apparently, Markey pays a lower tax rate than the average American who makes the same income — 20% compared to 30%.

Markey was unable to articulate a convincing justification for the discrepancy in tax rate and instead diverted the discussion to mortgage interest write-offs. However, the average American also writes off their mortgage interest and still pays 30%.

Markey also failed to name a single instance in which he bucked his own party on a proposed tax hike:

The Democrat’s poor performance has received minimal media coverage but with the election just five days away and Markey in the lead, it’s easy to understand why.
