House Republicans have launched another “Hispanic outreach” initiative. Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) is spearheading the most recent “comprehensive” outreach program.
As Roll Call reports, the initiative will focus on a “Spanish-language social-media initiative” in addition to getting the GOP’s message out to various Hispanic media platforms.
For instance, the “Conferencia GOP” recently released a video in which Hispanic Republicans — such as Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) — “spoke about Republican energy initiatives and how they would help Latino communities and boost jobs.”
Wadi Gaitan, who was hired by the Conference as a deputy press secretary for the initiative, seems to understand that, unlike such efforts in the past, “Hispanic outreach” should focus less on sounding like an appeal to moderates of the “No Labels” variety.
“We always want to make sure it’s not about becoming moderates, it’s about modernizing what we do,” Gaitan told Roll Call.
House Republicans are also reportedly having “listening sessions” with Hispanics and will have town halls this summer.
Gaitan cited Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) as a Tea Party Representative who speaks Spanish fluently and has been a good conservative ambassador to the Hispanic community.
