Establishment Republican Senators John McCain (AZ) and Lindsey Graham (SC) defended State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland on Friday, shortly after President Obama nominated the Benghazi talking points manipulator for a promotion. She would be up for the position of Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs. On Thursday, House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) asked that Nuland be brought forth for deposition.
Graham and McCain released a statement in Nuland’s support:
Ambassador Victoria Nuland has a long and distinguished record of service to our nation in both Republican and Democrat Administrations. She is knowledgeable and well-versed on the major foreign policy issues as well as respected by foreign policy experts in both parties. We look forward to her upcoming confirmation hearings in the United States Senate.
Nuland is a career State Department bureaucrat, serving under both Vice President Cheney and then as US ambassador to NATO under President Bush.
