Senate to Grill Commissioner in IRS Scandal Today

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee will grill Douglas Shulman, the IRS Commissioner who stepped down last November but was in charge when the agency began targeting Tea Party and conservative organizations as early as 2010.

This will be Shulman’s first public appearance since the IRS apologized for and admitted to targeting conservatives eleven days ago.

Last Friday, the House Ways and Means Committee grilled Steven Miller, the acting IRS Commissioner who was asked to resign by Treasury Secretary Jack Lew after the Inspector General’s audit revealed the IRS “inappropriately” targeted conservatives.  Miller, who had intended to leave the agency anyway, will step down next month, and he will join Shulman before the Senate Finance Committee.

On Monday, it was revealed that top White House officials–including the Chief of Staff–knew about the IRS investigation as early as last month but apparently did not bother to tell President Barack Obama, who has said he found out about the investigation from news reports eleven days ago.
