More conservative organizations and individuals have emerged to tell their stories of tax troubles after revelations surfaced that the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative organizations unjustly.
Speaker of the House John Boehner (R – OH) stated at the weekly GOP leaders press conference that Americans needed “accountability from their government.”
However, some Democrats are doubling down on the issue. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D – NV) told reporters on Tuesday that some conservative organizations, like Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS, deserve to be scrutinized.
“And I ask, what is Karl Rove ever done to improve the social welfare of the United States? That’s what these shadowy organizations are supposed to do,” Reid said. “That’s what their charter says.”
Congressman Alan Grayson (D – FL) told Breitbart News he thinks the “Koch brothers have abused the system by setting up 501c3’s that are doing political activity,” arguing, “It doesn’t make any sense to look for something on the other side, because it’s not there,” he said, adding, “You just can’t find something that’s similar to what the Koch brothers and other right-wingers have done, so in that sense, it’s not shocking to me that the IRS did what it did. You have to look for things where they are to be found.”
However, Congressman Dutch Ruppersberg (D – MD) told Breitbart News he wants Congress to jump on the matter right away. “It should be done in a bipartisan way. My recommendation to the president is to be very aggressive and to use all the resources he has to find out how this occurred and why this occurred and to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said.
Sheila Jackson lee (D – TX) told Breitbart News, “I think we don’t get anywhere in focusing in on what I call worker bees who thought they might be doing the right thing overwhelmed with interpreting Citizen’s United. Let’s get to the facts. I want to make sure that audits of small businesses and physician’s offices are done right, so there’s a lot of things that we can look at that might require looksee at the Internal Revenue Service. To condemn all employees, all workers, everybody in the IRS , I don’t think that’s the right way to go.”
