On May 8, Liberty Counsel Action delivered to Congress a petition signed by 102,453 American citizens, calling on lawmakers to launch a bipartisan investigation of the Benghazi terrorist attack on the U.S. Mission in Libya on Sept. 11, 2012 that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans serving this country overseas.
Liberty Counsel Action is chaired by Mathew D. Staver, the dean of Liberty University School of Law, and is often associated with Christian advocacy in federal court through his Liberty Counsel public-interest law firm. But there are various times when Liberty Counsel Action and Liberty University alike are leading advocates for issues with broad bipartisan support, such as America maintaining unflagging support for the nation of Israel.
Discovering the full truth about Benghazi should be one such bipartisan issue, according to Staver.
“This is not a ‘Republican’ issue or a ‘Democrat’ issue,” Staver explained. “It is vitally important to our national security that we find those responsible for this cowardly attack and hold them accountable.”
While it is difficult to get congressmen to ask hard questions of a president of the same political party, Staver argues that this story merits such cooperation: “We must find out why the Obama Administration went to such great lengths to deceive the American people by describing this attack as a ‘spontaneous’ act of violence rather than an organized, jihadist terrorist attack.”
Yesterday, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, acknowledged that further investigation was warranted on Benghazi. The coming days will reveal whether a critical mass of President Obama’s own party agrees to fully engage in this investigation.
If so, the first thing they can do is join many Republicans in calling on Speaker John Boehner to create a House Special Committee to investigate the Benghazi terrorist attack and the administration’s handling of the situation.
