Sen. Boozman Opposes Immigration Reform Bill over 'Amnesty Provisions'

Sen. John Boozman (R-AR) opposes the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill, his spokeswoman told Breitbart News. “Sen. Boozman is not supportive of amnesty so any bill that contains amnesty provisions he will not support, as is the case with the current proposal,” Boozman spokeswoman Sara Lasure said in an email.

Currently, no Republican senators other than those who are members of the Gang of Eight–Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and John McCain (R-AZ)–have endorsed the bill.

When asked through a spokesman by Breitbart News whether he supports the Gang of Eight bill, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) would not say yes or no. Instead, he addressed the U.S. immigration system in general.

“Conservatives ought to be leading the charge to create a legal system of immigration for our country,” Alexander told Breitbart News. “You cannot become French or Japanese, but to become a citizen of our country you must become an American, and it’s our job to set the rules for that.”

Many other Republican offices in the Senate have not returned requests for comment on whether they support the bill.

Boozman’s outspoken opposition to the bill could make it difficult for his colleague from Arkansas, Sen. Mark Pryor, to support it; Pryor, a Democrat in a red state, is up for re-election next year.
