The liberal advocacy group Americans United for Change is running a new TV spot targeting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell – by saying that he embraces gun policies backed by Al Qaeda. The ad, titled “Bad Company,” rips McConnell for opposing universal background checks on gun sales. Then it gets really good:
ANNOUNCER: So, who does agree with Mitch?
[Al Qaeda recruitment video runs, circa 2011]
AL QAEDA’S ADAM GADAHN: You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle without a background check, and most likely, without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?
So now Mitch McConnell wants to arm Al Qaeda.
The ad, says the New York Times, is problematic. But then again, “it’s the kind of thing Republicans do all the time.”
Who put together this ridiculous ad? A former Nancy Pelosi aide (Caren Benjamin) and a former executive director of the Democratic National Committee (Tom McMahon) head up the team. But the ad isn’t the first of its kind. Mayors Against Illegal Guns, led up by Michael Bloomberg, launched a television ad proclaiming the same thing, without singling out McConnell.
UPDATE: McConnell’s campaign has released a statement on the ad:
“To say these attacks are desperate and extreme would be an understatement. They are deplorable.
“The political Left has proven they’ll stop at nothing to target people who disagree with them. Racist attacks on Mitch’s family, illegal bugging, and connecting him with terrorists won’t stop him from fighting for the Second Amendment rights of law abiding Kentuckians.”
