Actress and Tennessee resident Ashley Judd delivered a keynote speech to the American Counseling Association 2013 conference in Cincinnati Friday. She told the audience gathered just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, the state in which she grew up and is rumored to be considering a Senate run against incumbent Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), that her mother, famous country singer Naomi Judd, can’t wait to turn her garage into a campaign headquarters.
Judd’s statement was immediately reported by several media outlets who noted that her mother’s garage is located in Tennessee, where both mother and daughter currently reside. Presumably, any potential Judd campaign for Kentucky’s 2014 election for the United States Senate would be officially headquartered somewhere in Kentucky, but Judd’s statement simply highlighted her relative inexperience as a political candidate.
Judd’s possible candidacy has been mentioned for several months. Initial enthusiasm within Democratic circles has declined, however, as it has become clear that Judd’s liberal views and “100% support” of President Barack Obama’s policies may not be well received in a state in which the President failed to receive more than 40 percent of the vote in either 2008 or 2012.
Local Cincinnati television station Fox 19 reported that Judd “spoke about her personal experience seeking treatment in 2006 for a childhood issue that lead to depression as an adult.” She also noted that she didn’t like being criticized, something she said “is ironic because she’s about the get $40 million worth of it.”
After her keynote address, Judd signed copies of her 2012 memoir, All That Is Bitter and Sweet.
