New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has made it his mission to control as much of citizens’ lives as humanly possible. But now he’s extending that control across the country, using his checkbook as leverage. His group Mayors Against Illegal Guns will spend some $12 million in a massive television ad buy to push for anti-gun legislation.
“I don’t think there’s ever been an issue where the public has spoken so clearly, where Congress hasn’t eventually understood and done the right thing,” Bloomberg told David Gregory in an NBC interview to be broadcast Sunday morning. The ads Bloomberg finances are specifically directed at universal background checks, the least controversial portion of his proposed legislation – and only the first step. As Bloomberg explained, “We are going to have a vote on – for sure – on assault weapons and we’re going to have a vote on background checks …. We’ve got the plan, we’re going to get the vote.”
Bloomberg has not been shy about spreading his cash around in order to push his agenda nationwide. In 2012, he launched a super PAC to target Congressional races, spending money to send “a clear message that the mayor intends to keep his wallet open after he leaves office to influence national policy around issues like guns, education and marriage equality.” He has already dropped millions to prop up Senator Mary Landrieu, school board candidates, and Barack Obama’s Race to the Top program.
