This morning, the State Department announced that Secretary of State John Kerry has committed $60 million in “non-lethal” aid to assist the Syrian rebels fighting the Assad regime. The announcement comes on the eve of automatic budget cuts across the government.

“The US will be providing an additional $60 million in non-lethal assistance to support the efforts of the Syrian opposition coalition over the coming months,” Kerry said.

The US has already provided $50 million to the Syrian rebels, bringing America’s total commitment, so far, to $110 million.

Kerry’s commitment will need Congressional approval.
