California Democrats introduced a bill on Wednesday that would incentivize states to register all handguns and so-called “assault weapons” in order to presumably be better able to take guns away from criminals and the mentally ill.
Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Jackie Speier (D-CA) introduced legislation that would “create a Justice Department grant program offering money to states to develop systems to ensure convicts and dangerously mentally ill people can’t keep their guns.”
The initiative would develop a database that would let law enforcement agencies in states “match new criminal convictions and mental health incidents with the state’s lists of handgun and assault-weapon owners.”
The law is nearly identical to California’s existing law used to prevent criminals and the mentally ill from possessing guns, but more conservative states may not want to require that all handguns and so-called assault weapons be registered, no matter how much money the Justice Department offers them to do so.
