Tim Scott's Vacant House Seat: Two Sanfords running?

The race for the South Carolina House seat vacated by Rep. Tim Scott, who was appointed to the Senate seat left open by Jim DeMint, is going to be mighty interesting.

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who left the governorship in 2009 after revelations of his extramarital affair came to light, says he’s going to make a run–and so is his ex-wife.

When asked if rumors of his impending run were true, Sanford answered, “To answer your question, yes, the accounts are accurate.” The district Scott vacated is the same district Sanford represented before he was governor. 

But there may be  two members of the former Sanford family in the race; his ex-wife Jenny said she may throw her hat in the ring: “I’d be crazy not to look at the race a little bit,” she said.

The Sanford duo have to announce soon; the deadline is the end of January. The Republican candidate to be Scott’s replacement will come from the GOP primary in March; the special general election is two months later.

South Carolina GOP Chairman Chad Connelly said Governor Sanford’s entry would whittle down the list of 14 candidates who had thought of running: “Gov. Sanford getting in would certainly alter the dynamics. That list would go down significantly.”
