Official: Obama to Keep Wasserman Schultz as DNC Chair

President Barack Obama will ask Democrats to keep Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) as Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in January when DNC members meet. 

A “senior Democratic official” told Politico that “because of the outstanding job she has done, the President will ask the members of the Democratic National Committee to ratify his choice of” Wasserman Schultz to “continue leading the Party as Chair.”

“The DNC will meet [in Washington on Jan. 22], the day after President Obama is sworn in for a second term, with the primary item of business being electing party officers, including the DNC Chair,” the official said. ” “With President Obama at the top of the ticket and Wasserman Schultz leading the Party, Democrats won the presidency, expanded its majority in the Senate and picked up seats in the House.”

During the 2012 election cycle, Wasserman Schultz ran up more debt than cash on hand as Chair of the DNC, and the Obama campaign’s internal polling found she was the campaign’s worst-liked surrogate. 

Wasserman Schultz has been rumored to be aiming for a more prominent leadership position in the House, but this will most likely preclude those ambitions, for now.
