With the coming of Barack Obama and his Age of Secularism has been a decided move away from the traditional religious ceremony known as marriage. According to the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, since 2008, the rate of marriage among adults has sharply decreased. In 2008, there were 4.5 million newlyweds, but in 2010 and 2011 that number dropped to 4.2 million.
Only 51% of adults were married in 2011, as opposed to 72% in 1960. Marriage is being phased out in favor of cohabitation or living as a single person. The decline in marriages crossed all ages and levels of education; the only exception was in the elderly over 65, where there was no significant difference between 2008 and 2011.
Among less-educated Americans, the marriage rate dropped even more precipitously; adults who had not completed high school, there was a 14% decline, while among college graduates there was a 10% decline.
