Friday, in a shocking move, Local 150, an AFL-CIO member and the largest local in the 8th congressional district of Illinois, endorsed Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, a Tea Party favorite, for reelection to Congress. The union had endorsed Barack Obama for President, but favored Walsh over his Democratic opponent, Tammy Duckworth. Walsh is also endorsed by the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and the taxpayer watchdog’s group, the National Taxpayers Union, which makes for an amazing bipartisan trifecta.
Local 150 President Jim Sweeney asserted:
“Walsh’s support of the Davis-Bacon Act and other laws that enable workers to raise families and contribute to the economy is a testament to his willingness to make tough political decisions to protect working men and women of the 8th district and across the State of Illinois.”
Walsh is one of the most conservative members of the House and the 8th district is not a conservative district. His opponent, Tammy Duckworth, was Obama’s Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs in 2009.
