Betty Sutton, the Democrat who is running for Congress in Ohio’s 16th district, has spent her career hiding from her uber-liberal voting record. She did it in 2006 when she attempted to replace Sherrod Brown, who left to run for the Senate. She did it in 2010 against Republican Tom Ganley, and now she’s doing it again in her race against Republican Jim Renacci.
Sutton got away with her evasion before, as her district was heavily Democratic, but in Ohio’s redrawn 16th district, the voters lean Republican. Her troubles mounting as polls show her behind and fading, Sutton’s liberal chickens are coming home to roost. She’s one of the most liberal politicians in America, with an “F” rating from the NRA and failing grades from business groups like NFIB and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; the American Conservative Union said her record is farther left than Nancy Pelosi’s.
Sutton had so much trouble raising funds that she didn’t air a single TV ad until mid-October, but now outside backers have poured millions into her campaign. The result? Sutton and her backers have gone bonkers, slandering Renacci’s wife, claiming that Renacci’s campaign is funded by Chinese prostitutes, and incredibly, creeping around Renacci’s home with a video camera.
But most egregiously, Sutton has now falsely asserted that Renacci is running for office to enrich himself, even though Renacci left a very lucrative business to run. It’s especially egregious because Sutton, while in Congress, voted to spend billions to bail out companies she has invested in, borrowed money from China to bail out companies she has stock in, and is heavily invested in companies that ship jobs overseas.
The hypocrisy is staggering. Ohioans need to know exactly which candidate is running for Congress to become richer.
