Angus King, the supposed independent backed by the Democratic party who once held a gigantic lead of almost 30 points in the Maine Senate race, is now in serious trouble. According to a new poll conducted by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, King’s lead over Charlie Summers, the Republican candidate, has evaporated. The poll shows King with 37% of the vote, Summers with 33.5%, and Democrat Cynthia Dill with 17%. As recently as early September, the same poll showed King at 44% and Summers at 33%.
What makes matters truly dicey for King is that 12% of Maine voters are undecided, and his support has been waning steadily since June, expedited in September by revelations about his crony capitalist relationship with the Obama Administration.
