Thanks to the United States Department of Agriculture and First Lady Michelle Obama and their insistence on changing the diet served at public schools, students across the country are giving up eating the food served at school and starving.
And now black markets are emerging; some kids in New Bedford, Massachusetts are smuggling in bottles of chocolate syrup and selling it by the squeeze because other students have resigned themselves to simply drinking milk for lunch. Nancy Carvalho, director of food services for New Bedford Public Schools, allowed that hummus and black bean salads don’t exactly draw long lines of students. These items have been tough sells in elementary cafeterias.
In Pierre, South Dakota, middle school student Samantha Gortmaker stated, “I know a lot of my friends who are just drinking a jug of milk for their lunch. And they are not getting a proper meal.”
The new government regulations have increased the cost of a lunch from20 to 25 cents per plate. But Obama government officials are determined to stick with the plan – even if the kids aren’t eating. USDA Deputy Undersecretary Janey Thornton opined:
One thing I think we need to keep in mind as kids say they’re still hungry is that many children aren’t used to eating fruits and vegetables at home, much less at school. So it’s a change in what they are eating. If they are still hungry, it’s that they are not eating all the food that’s being offered.
Wow. Hadn’t thought of that. Kids who make decisions themselves without being told by the government what to do?
If these kids live, they may grow up to be conservatives yet.
