After Egypt’s Islamists, spurred on by its Muslim Brotherhood ruling leader and party, stormed our embassy, shredded our flag (and flew what appears to be an Al Qaeda flag in its place) and then demanded we prosecute our own citizens for their free speech, Nancy Pelosi wants to save their aid. The United States sends Egypt around $1.5 billion a year.
“If they’re suggesting we should cut off assistance to Egypt,” Pelosi said of some Republicans in Congress, “I don’t agree with that.”
House conservatives are threatening to vote no on a continuing resolution that would kick in the $1.5b to Egypt.
A handful of lawmakers voiced outrage Wednesday at the Obama administration’s response to the attacks on the U.S. embassies in those countries, and suggested the inclusion of foreign aid could influence their votes.
“It makes it easier to vote ‘no’ ” on the spending bill, freshman Rep. Jeff Landry (R-La.) said at a press event with conservative House Republicans at the Capitol.The House on Thursday plans to vote on a continuing resolution that would extend federal funding through March, preventing a government shutdown before the election or during a lame-duck session of Congress this fall. While conservatives pushed to avoid a shutdown fight, they have also raised alarms about the inclusion of additional welfare funding in the bill.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-Ky.) said that defunding Libya and Egypt in the continuing resolution (CR) would not be possible.

Another senior House Republican, Rep. David Dreier (Calif.), however, said cutting funding to Libya and Egypt would be “a big mistake.”
“Now more than ever it’s essential that we strengthen ties with these fledgling democracies,” said Dreier, co-chairman of the House Democracy Partnership.
The Republicans sounding like Pelosi-Democrats are shameful. Dreier apparently doesn’t understand that we’ve spent decades, lives, and billions “strengthening the ties” or whatever catchphrase masks “buying them off” and it hasn’t worked. If it worked so well, I’d like for Rep. Dreier to explain why we have a sodomized dead ambassador, three other dead Americans, and rioting mobs at our embassies and consulates in the Middle East?
It’s a Republican-led house; it should be stripped or the bill voted down until it is stripped. There is no excuse.
The administration voted “present” on the question back in April.
