The same Gravis Marketing Poll released today that showed Mitt Romney leading Barack Obama by 49-44 in Virginia showed Republican George Allen leading Democrat Tim Kaine 47-42 in the Senate race. For Allen, today’s 5 point margin reflects a 2 point increase from a poll conducted a month earlier by the same firm.
The poll was welcome news for an Allen campaign said by some local activists to be lacking in grassroots enthusiasm.
The outcome of the Senate race is expected to closely reflect the results of the Presidential contest in Virginia. Both candidates have long records in Virginia politics. Allen is the former Governor and Senator who lost his 2006 Senate re-election bid to Democrat Jim Webb. Kaine is also a former Governor, and has served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Kaine was featured prominently at the DNC in Charlotte, where he voiced his strong support for President Obama and his policies.
Both Kaine and Allen anticipate a close race that will go down to the wire. Allen recently told a Fredricksburg, Virginia newspaper he thinks the outcome will be decided by as few as 10,000 votes.
The poll of 2,238 likely voters was conducted on September 8 and 9 by Gravis Marketing, a non-partisan research company, and Capitol Correspondent.
