Democrats’ 2012 party platform opposes “any and all efforts to weaken or undermine” abortion rights, which means the platform does not oppose taxpayer-funded late-term abortions opposed by most Americans.
“The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay,” the platform reads. “We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.”
Maureen Ferguson, senior Policy Advisor at The Catholic Association, said Democrats risked “further alienating Catholics and other pro-religious freedom, pro-life constituencies.”
“President Obama has opposed even minor limits on abortion, such as a ban on sex-selective abortion, a ban on late term abortions past the point at which the unborn child is capable of feeling pain, and has even opposed legislation to protect a baby accidentally born alive after a failed abortion,” Ferguson said. “As our recent poll of Catholics by QEV Analytics demonstrated, the President is pouring gasoline on a fire he should be looking to extinguish.”
Lila Rose, president of Live Action, said the the DNC lacked pro-life Democrats and features Hollywood “stars hostile to the pro-life cause and religious freedom.”
“The contemporary Democratic Party has positioned itself as extremists on abortion – anywhere, for any reason – paid for by taxpayers,” Rose wrote. “President Obama is in the pocket of Big Abortion and his record shows he is the most pro-abortion president in American history.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose abortions performed past the point at which the unborn can feel pain.
“Barack Obama heartlessly refused to support a ban on sex-selection abortion and late-term abortions past the point at which unborn children feel pain, he voted four times to deny constitutional protection to children born alive after a failed abortion – preferring to leave their fate to the abortionist who, only moments before, sought to kill them,” Dannenfelser said.
While the mainstream media hounded Republicans for an allegedly “extreme” pro-life platform during coverage of the RNC, journalists have not mentioned or asked any candidates about the pro-abortion without exceptions positions in the DNC platform.
