Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), the embattled Republican nominee for the Missouri Senate seat currently held by Democrat Claire McCaskill, said that Republican Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan personally asked him to withdraw from the race.
In a phone call Tuesday as an earlier deadline approached for Akin to drop out voluntarily, Ryan “advised me that it would be good for me to step down,” the embattled congressman told “Today” host Matt Lauer. He said he replied that “I was going to be looking at this very seriously.” But he said that ultimately his decision “was not about me” but about representing the citizens of Missouri.
The mainstream media at the Washington Post, ABC, and NBC will continue to highlight every statement that Todd Akin makes as long as he remains the Republican Party’s nominee in the Missouri Senate race. Akin’s opponent, Claire McCaskill, continues to encourage him to stay in the race as well.
