This afternoon, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released a statement about Republican Senate candidate Rep. Todd Akin, who is facing incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill in Missouri:
“Congressman Akin made a deeply offensive error at a time when his candidacy carries great consequence for the future of our country. In his heart of hearts, I’m certain that he is sincerely sorry for what he said but in this instance, when the future of our country is at stake, sorry is not sufficient. To continue serving his country in the honorable way he has served throughout his career, it is time for Congressman Akin to step aside.”
McConnell is just the latest in a long line of conservatives to come out against Akin’s continued candidacy. He joins Senators Scott Brown (R-MA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI), Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, American Crossroads, the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and conservative commentators across the spectrum.
Akin has pledged to remain in the race regardless.
