The Chick-fil-A debate stands as another microcosm of the differences between liberals and conservatives in our country. On one side, we saw people patiently and peacefully standing in line to show their support and patronize the Christian-owned restaurant; on the other, we saw Chick-fil-As vandalized, targeted with bomb threats, and their employees harassed by “no H8” bullies.
After the successful Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day promoted by Governor Mike Huckabee on August 1st, the crazed left tried to launch their own protest with a same-sex “kiss-in” on Friday. Over 670,000 Americans signed up to join the Huckabee Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, whereas only 15,000 people signed up for the kiss-in and it turned out to be a bust. The sad thing is, the mainstream media wanted to cover the kiss-in more than the hundreds of thousands of Americans who went to Chick-fil-A on August 1st.
The family history of Chick-fil-A is the kind of American success story that should be celebrated. Instead, the left, fueled by class warfare rhetoric from the Obama reelection campaign, has tried to portray corporate America as heartless money-sucking monsters because the Left hates capitalism. Targeting Chick-fil-A fits right into this demonization narrative.
Case in point is former Obama Chief of Staff and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Emanuel went after Chick-fil-A and backed an alderman’s fascist idea to ban it from the city. Rahm should be focused on the murder epidemic his city is facing; it was recently named the “deadliest global city.” Or, at the very least, he could businesses to come to Chicago and create jobs where the unemployment rate is 9.8 percent. Instead he tries to interfere with free speech and the free market.
The Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) even stepped in and said that a ban on Chick-fil-A would be “viewpoint discrimination” and thus unconstitutional. This firm stand by an organization that backs gay marriage just shows how out of touch Rahm Emanuel really is. Emanuel was not the only big city mayor who made a fool out of himself over chicken sandwiches. Liberal mayors in Boston, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. made similar uneducated statements.
While conservatives stood up for free speech this week, liberals only tried to shut it down. The battle over Chick-fil-A is not merely about tasty chicken, but about the future of political debate in our country. Which side are you on?
