During the month of June, the Obama campaign ran a $12 million deficit. The President’s campaign committee, Obama for America, spent $58.1 million, but it raised only $45.9 million.
In contrast, Mitt Romney’s campaign committee, Romney for President, had a surplus of $5.5 million. It spent $27.5 million and raised $33 million.
Obama for America began and ended the month of June with more cash on hand than Romney for President. In Federal Election Commission reports, Obama for America stated that it began June with $109.7 million on hand, but ended it with $97.5 million cash on hand. Despite Obama for America’s deficit spending, it still had $70 million more cash on hand than Romney for President’s $23 million.
But direct contributions to the candidates campaign committees tell only part of the story.
Both the Romney campaign and the Obama campaign have two additional sources of fundraising. When all three sources are combined for each campaign, the Romney team dominated, both in terms of cash raised during the month of June and total cash on hand at the end of June.
Combined with Obama for America’s $46 million, the Obama Victory Fund and the Democratic National Committee brought the Obama fundraising team total to $70 million in June.
But when the $33 million raised by Romney for President is combined with the Romney Victory Fund and the Republican National Committee, the Romney fundraising team raised $105 million in June–$35 million more than the Obama fundraising team.
And, as a website called “Race 4 2012” reported today, cash on hand for Romney’s three sources of funding totaled $170 million on June 30. While Romney for President’s cash on hand was $70 million less than Obama for America, the Romney team actually had more cash available on June 30 than the Obama team. When cash on hand from Obama for America, the Obama Victory Fund, and the Democratic National Committee is combined, the total cash availalble of $144 million, is a whopping $26 million less than the Romney team’s $170 million.
This marked the first time that the three Romney related committees had more cash on hand than the three Obama related committees. Fundraising momentum seems to be on the side of the Romney team, while the Obama team is struggling.
In fact, the Obama team has launched several unsuccessful fundraising initiatives, including the ill advised “ask your wedding guests to contribute to the Obama campaign instead of buying you a wedding gift” campaign. As the Daily Caller reports, that initiative was a total flop.
July fundraising results for both Obama and Romney will be available for public viewing at the Federal Election Commission’s website on August 20th. If the Romney fundraising momentum continues in the filings for the month of July, it could be an uphill battle for the Obama campaign the rest of the way to the election in November.
